Area and Perimeter Worksheets: A Grade 3-5 Teacher Guide

Area and perimeter worksheets work best when they follow the order students build the ideas: count unit squares, multiply side lengths, measure the distance around, and only then use both formulas, including backward to find a missing side. In Common Core, grade 3 builds the meaning (3.MD.C.6, 3.MD.C.7, 3.MD.D.8), grade 4 applies the formulas to real-world and unknown-side problems (4.MD.A.3), and grade 5 extends area to rectangles with fractional side lengths (5.NF.B.4b) before moving on to volume.

The hard part for most students isn't the arithmetic. It's knowing which measurement a question wants. The sequence and routines below are built around that.

Steps 1 to 5 are real items from the Math Practice Library's grade 3 and grade 4 packs; step 5 comes from the Challenge level of Area and perimeter formulas. Step 6 is an example to build in class.

Why students confuse area and perimeter

The two ideas usually arrive close together, use the same rectangles, and often produce similar-sized numbers. A 4 by 4 square has an area of 16 square units and a perimeter of 16 units. Same number, completely different measurement. That square makes a strong opening question: "Both answers are 16. Are they the same thing?"

Language and habits that help:

  • Area covers. Perimeter goes around. Have students shade the inside for area and trace the edge with a finger for perimeter before they compute anything.
  • Say the unit every time. Area is in square units, like floor tiles. Perimeter is in units of length, like fencing. When a student writes "16" with no unit, ask "16 what?"
  • Count edges, not squares. On a grid, students finding perimeter often count the squares along the border. A 2 by 2 square is only 4 squares, but its perimeter is 8 units, because each corner square contributes two edges.

The Support perimeter page shown above keeps the grid inside each rectangle, so students can count unit edges around a 2 by 2 square (8 units) or a 4 by 6 rectangle (20 units). The On Level page removes the grid and labels only the side lengths, so students must add all four sides, such as 10 and 7 for a perimeter of 34 units. That move away from counting is deliberate, and it's worth pointing out to students when they switch pages.

Grade 3: build area from tiles before the formula

Third graders should tile rectangles before they multiply. Covering a rectangle with square tiles and noticing the equal rows is what connects area to arrays and multiplication, and it keeps "length times width" from becoming a rule with no meaning.

A Challenge item in the Area by counting squares pack does this nicely: "Find the area by counting. Then: if one more row of 5 squares were added, what would the area be?" The rectangle has 10 rows of 5, or 50 square units, and one more row makes 55. Students who see that one more row adds exactly 5 are using the distributive property, whether or not they have the name for it yet.

Classroom moves for grade 3:

  • Start with a fully tiled grid, then cover part of it with a sticky note so students have to reason about the hidden squares.
  • Ask for two ways to find the same area: counting and multiplying, like 7 × 7 = 49.
  • Introduce perimeter once area feels solid, and reuse the same rectangles so the contrast is visible.

Area and perimeter worksheets for grade 4: formulas and missing sides

By grade 4, students apply the formulas: area = length × width, and perimeter = 2 × (length + width), or the sum of all four sides. Good area and perimeter worksheets for grade 4 mix both questions on one page, so students must decide which measurement is being asked for, and they include problems that run the formulas backward.

Here's what changes across the three levels shown above:

For missing-side perimeter problems, teach students to halve first. Half the perimeter is one length plus one width. For a perimeter of 100 cm and a width of 36 cm, half is 50 cm, and 50 - 36 = 14 cm. A common wrong answer here is 64 cm, which comes from subtracting the width from the whole perimeter.

For missing-side area problems, connect back to division: 25 × ? = 1000, so the length is 1000 ÷ 25 = 40 cm.

One discussion question is worth a whole class period: can two rectangles have the same area but different perimeters? A rectangle with an area of 12 square units can be 1 by 12 (perimeter 26 units), 2 by 6 (perimeter 16 units) or 3 by 4 (perimeter 14 units). Students who can explain that are no longer mixing up the two measurements.

Area and perimeter worksheets for grade 5: what comes next

Grade 5 doesn't add a new perimeter standard. Area comes back in two other forms.

Fractional side lengths (5.NF.B.4b). Students find the area of a rectangle with fraction side lengths by tiling it with smaller pieces of a unit square, and they connect that to multiplying fractions. For a rectangle 3/4 m by 2/3 m, split a 1 m by 1 m square into 4 columns and 3 rows, making 12 equal pieces. The rectangle covers 3 columns and 2 rows, which is 6 of the 12 pieces: 6/12, or 1/2 square meter. That matches 3/4 × 2/3 = 6/12 = 1/2. Volume (5.MD.C). The count-then-multiply thinking from grade 3 area returns in three dimensions: count unit cubes, notice the layers, then multiply length × width × height.

That means area and perimeter worksheets for grade 5 are mostly review. The library doesn't have a separate grade 5 area and perimeter pack. Differentiating one lesson with three levels

A routine for a mixed class that takes very little setup:

  1. Two-question check (3 minutes). Show one rectangle, 6 cm by 4 cm, and ask for its area and its perimeter. The answers are 24 sq cm and 20 cm.
  2. Group by what you see.

  1. Close with one question for everyone. "Can two rectangles have the same perimeter but different areas? Draw two." A 1 by 5 rectangle and a 2 by 4 rectangle both have a perimeter of 12 units, with areas of 5 and 8 square units.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between area and perimeter?

Area is the amount of flat space inside a shape, measured in square units. Perimeter is the distance around the outside, measured in units of length. A 4 by 4 square has an area of 16 square units and a perimeter of 16 units, which shows they are different measurements even when the numbers match.

What grade learns area and perimeter?

In Common Core, third graders find area by counting unit squares and by multiplying side lengths, and they find perimeters of polygons. Fourth graders apply the area and perimeter formulas, including finding an unknown side, and fifth graders find areas of rectangles with fractional side lengths.

Should I teach area or perimeter first?

Common Core lists area before perimeter in grade 3, and it is a sensible order, because tiling a rectangle connects directly to arrays and multiplication. Introduce perimeter once area is secure, using the same rectangles so students can compare the two.

How do you find a missing side when you know the perimeter?

Halve the perimeter to get one length plus one width, then subtract the side you know. For a perimeter of 56 cm and a width of 5 cm, half is 28 cm, and 28 minus 5 gives a length of 23 cm.
