Small Group Math: What to Do at the Teacher Table
Small group math is a short, focused lesson you teach to three to six students while the rest of the class works on their own. The group shares one current need, whether that's a gap, a new grade-level skill or readiness for a stretch, so you can teach exactly that, see every student's thinking, and fix mistakes on the spot. A strong teacher-table lesson runs about 15 minutes and follows the same routine every day.
This guide gives you that routine, a way to form groups, and specific small group math activities and games for first and second grade.
How to form small group math groups
Group by what students can do right now on one skill, not by general math ability.
- Give a short check. Three or four problems on the skill you're about to teach, at the end of the previous lesson.
- Sort into three piles. Not yet, almost, and got it.
- Form groups from the piles. Three to six students each. Split a big pile into two groups.
- Plan a different goal for each group. Not yet: build the skill with a model. Almost: practice with feedback. Got it: stretch the thinking.
- Regroup when the skill changes, and at least every few weeks.
Every group comes to the teacher table, including the students who "got it." They need you too, just for a different reason.
A 15-minute small group math lesson routine

The second grade pages above show how the same skill looks different for each group. The Support page includes 38 - 17 = 21, which needs no trading. The On Level page includes 43 - 36 = 7, which does. The Challenge page moves the unknown to the start: ___ - 39 = 53.
- Support group: Build 38 with base-ten blocks, take away 1 ten and 7 ones, and count what's left: 2 tens and 1 one, or 21.
- On Level group: Build 43 and try to take away 6 ones. There are only 3. Trade one ten for ten ones, giving 3 tens and 13 ones. Now 13 - 6 = 7 ones, and 3 tens - 3 tens = 0 tens. The answer is 7.
- Challenge group: Ask, "What number minus 39 leaves 53?" Students reason that the start must be 53 + 39, which is 92, then check: 92 - 39 = 53.
Small group math activities for 1st grade
First graders learn best with their hands busy. Keep materials at the table so no time is lost fetching them.
Ten more, ten less on a hundred chart. Point to 47. Ask for 10 more, and have students slide their finger down one row to 57. Ask for 10 less than 75 and slide up to 65. Ask what stayed the same (the ones digit) and what changed (the tens digit).
Build and compare. Each student builds two numbers with tens rods and ones cubes, then decides which is greater.

This On Level page asks students to write <, > or = between numbers, such as 64 ___ 62 (answer >) and 30 ___ 60 (answer <). At the table, build 64 and 62 side by side. The tens match, so compare the ones: 4 is more than 2, so 64 > 62. Students who compare the tens first make fewer mistakes on pairs like 43 and 47.
Count on from the bigger number. Show 4 + 11. Have students put 11 "in their head," tap it on their chest, then count on 4 more: 12, 13, 14, 15. Then ask why starting at 11 is faster than starting at 4.
Snap and break. Hand each student a train of 10 linking cubes plus loose cubes. Call out a number like 36; students snap together 3 tens and add 6 ones, then say "3 tens and 6 ones."
Small group math activities for 2nd grade
Counting up to make change. Money word problems are a good fit for the teacher table because students can talk through each step.

The Challenge money page includes problems like "Felix buys a ruler for 78¢ and pays with one dollar. How much change should Felix get?" Teach students to count up from the price: 78¢ to 80¢ is 2¢, and 80¢ to 100¢ is 20¢, so the change is 22¢. Another item, "Nadia has 4 one-dollar bills, 4 dimes, 2 nickels and 2 pennies," totals $4.52: $4.00, then 40¢, then 10¢, then 2¢.
Jumps on an open number line. For 71 - 36, draw a line, start at 71, jump back 30 to 41, then back 6 to 35. Students see subtraction as distance, which helps when column subtraction with trading feels confusing.
Odd or even pairs. Give each student a handful of counters. They pair them up. If every counter has a partner, the number is even. Challenge students write the even number as a double, such as 16 = 8 + 8.
Small group math games that teach
Games work best at the end of a session, or as a follow-up at a center, once students understand the skill. Keep the rules simple enough to explain in one minute.
Race to 100 (2nd grade). Players roll two dice, add, and take that many ones cubes. Whenever they have 10 ones, they trade them for a ten rod. The first player to reach 100 wins. The trading is the point, so ask "How many tens do you have now?" often.
Build the Bigger Number (1st grade). Each player draws two digit cards and arranges them to make the largest two-digit number they can. With a 3 and a 7, 73 beats 37. Players compare using <, > or =.
Ten More, Ten Less Spinner (1st grade). Spin a paper clip on a spinner labeled "+10" and "-10." Move a marker on a hundred chart. The first player to reach the bottom row wins.
Coin Grab (2nd grade). Each player grabs a small handful of coins and counts the total. The larger total wins the round. Stretch version: say how much more is needed to reach $1.00.
What to write down while you teach
Keep a simple grid on a clipboard: student name, skill, and one mark for "on their own," "with a prompt" or "not yet." Add a two-word note when you see something specific, like "forgets traded ten."

What the rest of the class is doing

Frequently asked questions
How many students should be in a small math group?
Three to six students works well. With fewer than three you lose peer talk; with more than six you can't watch everyone's hands and pencils. If a group grows past six, split it by the skill each student needs.
How often should I meet with each small group?
Meet with students who need the most support most often, ideally daily or close to it. On-level and challenge groups can meet two or three times a week. The goal is enough contact to catch misunderstandings early, not an equal schedule for every group.
What do on-level and advanced students do at the teacher table?
On-level groups practice the grade-level skill with feedback while it's new. Challenge groups work on problems where the unknown moves, two steps are needed, or they must explain why. Every group benefits from time with you, not only students who are behind.
How do I start small group math at the beginning of the year?
Teach independent routines first. Spend the first week or two practicing centers or independent work while you circulate. Once the room runs without you, start meeting with one group a day, then add groups.
