Spiral Review in Math: A Simple Weekly Plan for Grades 3-5
Spiral review in math means bringing back skills students learned weeks or months ago, a few problems at a time, on a regular schedule. A good daily set is short (four to six problems), mixes skills so kids have to figure out what each problem is asking, and shows you which old skills are slipping before a unit test does. The plan below takes about ten minutes a day and very little prep.
Why spiral review in math beats one big review day
Most units end with a review day and a test, and then the class moves on. A few weeks later, the skill is rusty. Spaced practice (coming back to material over time) and mixed practice (switching between problem types instead of doing one type at a time) are well-established teaching approaches, and spiral review puts both into a daily routine.
Mixing is the part that often gets skipped. When every problem on a page is a rounding problem, a student doesn't have to decide anything; they just round. When rounding sits next to an area problem and a division fact, they have to read, recognize and choose. That choice is what real tests and real life ask for.
What goes in a daily spiral review
Use a simple recipe for each set of five:

Rotate what goes in slots 2 to 4 so every skill you've taught comes back at least every couple of weeks. You don't need a perfect system. A list of taught skills on a sticky note, with tally marks as you use them, works fine.
A four-week spiral review plan
Here's one way to lay out a month for a third-grade class that just finished multiplication and started fractions.

What it looks like in grades 3, 4 and 5

3rd grade math spiral review, free to build from your own files
Third-grade spiral review should keep multiplication and division facts in constant rotation while rounding, area and fractions come and go. Examples from the Grade 3 set:
- On Level: 6 × 8 = 48, 24 ÷ 3 = 8, and "Write 3 as a fraction with denominator 1" (3/1)
- Challenge: "5 × (2 + 5) = (5 × 2) + (5 × ___)" (5), "___ × 80 = 720" (9), and "Round 616 to the nearest hundred" (600)
The Challenge items reuse facts in new shapes. The distributive property and multiplying by a multiple of ten both rest on a plain fact like 9 × 8 = 72.

4th grade: keep place value next to new fractions
Fourth grade adds a lot at once: multi-digit operations, fraction equivalence, decimals and angles. A spiral set keeps them all in view. From the Grade 4 set:
- Support: "Write 7/10 as a decimal" (0.7) and "The 3 in 300 is ___ times the value of the 3 in 30" (10)
- On Level: "Round 66515 to the nearest thousand" (67000), "Write 69/100 as a decimal" (0.69), and "What angle is 3/8 of a full 360° turn?" (135°)

5th grade: fractions, decimals and expressions side by side
Fifth-grade errors often come from mixing up operations: dividing when a problem calls for multiplying, or treating decimals like whole numbers. Mixed sets bring that to the surface. From the Grade 5 set:
- On Level: 5 × (9 + 6) - 5 = 70, 1/3 ÷ 5 = 1/15, 3 ÷ 1/4 = 12, and 4.8 ÷ 0.8 = 6
- Challenge: "6 sandwiches are shared equally by 4 people. How much does each get? Between which two whole numbers is that?" (1 1/2; between 1 and 2)

Use the results: the Friday tally
Spiral review only pays off if the misses change what you teach. Keep a tally sheet with skills down the side:
- On Friday, skim the week's sets, or have students mark their own with a key.
- Add a tally next to a skill each time a student misses it.
- Any skill with a cluster of tallies becomes next week's small-group lesson, and it shows up twice in the following week's sets.
- If one student keeps missing the same skill, give them a Support page on just that skill (smaller numbers, a worked example and a strategy tip) before mixing it back in.

Keep it short and low-stakes
A few habits keep spiral review from turning into a chore:
- Time-box it. Ten minutes, checking included. If a set routinely runs longer, cut a problem.
- Go over one problem, not all five. Pick the one most students missed and talk it through.
- Don't grade for accuracy. Completion credit or nothing. Kids should feel safe getting old skills wrong.
- Vary the format. Paper on Monday, whiteboards on Tuesday, and on Wednesday a partner routine: you solve 1–2, I solve 3–4, we check each other.
Spiral review isn't the same job as a warm-up. Five-minute math warm ups get heads ready for today's lesson, while spiral review keeps older skills from fading. Plenty of classrooms use both.

What is spiral review in math?
Spiral review means returning to skills students learned earlier, in small doses spread over weeks and months. Instead of reviewing a unit once before the test, students see a few older problems mixed in regularly. The mixing matters: students have to recognize what kind of problem each one is, not just repeat the steps from today's lesson.
How many problems should a daily spiral review have?
Four to six is enough for most classes. That fits in about ten minutes, including a quick check. Longer sets tend to get rushed, and the goal is steady contact with old skills, not a second lesson.
Should I grade spiral review?
Grade it lightly or not at all. It works best as low-stakes practice where mistakes are information. Track which skills keep coming back wrong and use that to plan small-group reteaching.
Is spiral review the same as morning work?
It can be, but it doesn't have to be. Morning work is a time slot; spiral review is a way of choosing problems. You can use it as morning work, homework or a short block after recess, as long as it mixes older skills in on purpose.
