Math Warm Ups for Grades 2-5: Five-Minute Routines

Math warm ups are short starts to a lesson: one or two problems, about five minutes, that get students thinking about numbers and point them toward what you're about to teach. The best ones are quick to set up, have more than one way in, and connect to today's lesson so the warm-up isn't a detour. Below are six routines, examples for 2nd through 5th grade, and a simple weekly rotation.

What a good math warm-up does (and doesn't do)

A warm-up has one job: get brains ready for today's math. That usually means one of three things.

  • Wake up a prerequisite. Before a lesson on rounding to the nearest hundred, asking "which hundred is 649 closer to?" brings back the idea of distance on a number line.
  • Build number sense. Estimating, comparing and reasoning about size without calculating.
  • Get everyone talking. A problem with several strategies gives quieter students a way to join in.

What it isn't: a quiz, a full worksheet, or the place to teach something brand new. If a warm-up needs a long explanation, save that problem for the lesson.

Six math warm ups that take five minutes

Each routine works at any grade; only the numbers change. The rhythm stays the same: one minute of silent think time, two or three minutes of sharing, one minute connecting to today's lesson.

Rotate two or three of these rather than all six. Students get faster at a routine they know, which leaves more time for thinking and less for explaining directions.

Warm-up ideas by grade

The examples below come from pages in the Math Practice Library, reworked as warm-ups. Put one problem on the board, not a whole page.

Math warm ups for 2nd grade

Second graders are working on place value to 1000 and mental math with tens and hundreds. Try a missing-number warm-up with 509 - 10. The tens digit is 0, so there's no ten to simply take away. Students have to think of 509 as 50 tens and 9 ones: 50 tens minus 1 ten is 49 tens, so the answer is 499. Ask, "What happened to the hundreds digit, and why?"

Another quick one: "Write 16 as the sum of two equal addends." The answer is 8 + 8. Follow up with "Is 16 odd or even? How does 8 + 8 show it?" That links doubles to even numbers in a few minutes.

Math warm ups for 3rd grade

For a "which is closer?" warm-up, draw a number line from 600 to 700 and ask where 649 goes. Is it closer to 600 or 700? It rounds to 600, but only just. Then try 253 on a line from 200 to 300, which rounds to 300. Students who can picture the halfway mark rarely need to memorize a rounding rule.

Math warm ups for 4th grade

Decimal comparison makes a strong "greater or less" warm-up. Put up 0.46 ___ 0.47, then 0.30 ___ 0.30. The first is less than (46 hundredths versus 47 hundredths); the second is equal. Then push one step further: "Is 0.3 less than 0.30 because it has fewer digits?" No. Three tenths and thirty hundredths are the same amount. Having students read each decimal aloud in words makes the comparison much easier to see.

For a true-or-false round, try "51 is a multiple of 6." It's false: 6 × 8 = 48 and 6 × 9 = 54, so 51 falls between them.

Math warm ups for 5th grade

"Greater or less?" is ideal before a lesson on multiplying fractions. Without calculating: "Is 1/3 × 7 greater than or less than 7?" (Less, because you're taking a third of 7.) "Is 5/4 × 6 greater than or less than 6?" (Greater, because 5/4 is more than one whole.) Students who can answer these can tell whether an answer is reasonable before they calculate it.

The three levels above show how the same idea stretches. The Support page includes questions like "7/4 × 4" and "1/4 × 6," and the Challenge page adds problems where the product is equal to the starting number, such as "9 × 8/8."

A number-of-the-day warm-up with powers of ten works well too: "What is 75 × 10³?" (75,000.) When a student says "just add three zeros," ask why that works. Each × 10 makes every digit worth ten times as much, so after three of them each digit has moved three places left.

Write a month of these on index cards once, then pull the card that fits each day's lesson.

Keeping warm-ups to five minutes

  • Show, don't explain. Put the problem up and start the timer. If the routine needs a long explanation, pick a simpler routine.
  • Use whiteboards or fingers. Every student answers, not just the first raised hand.
  • Collect strategies, not only answers. "How did you know?" matters more than "What did you get?"
  • Stop at the connection. End with one sentence, such as "Today we're going to use that," and move on even if the talk is lively.
  • Keep a stack ready. Prepared cards mean the warm-up starts the moment students sit down.

A warm-up at the start pairs naturally with a quick check at the end. Math exit tickets show whether the lesson landed, and the two together bookend a lesson in about ten minutes.

Warm-ups, spiral review and practice pages

These three get mixed up, and each has a different purpose.

  • Warm-up: one or two problems, usually oral, aimed at today's lesson.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a math warm-up be?

About five minutes, and rarely more than ten. A warm-up is a short start, not a lesson. A lively discussion can run a little long now and then, but a warm-up that regularly takes 15 minutes is eating time students need for new learning.

What is the difference between a warm-up and spiral review?

A warm-up is usually one or two problems, often done aloud or on whiteboards, chosen to prepare students for today's lesson. Spiral review is a short written set that mixes older skills on purpose to keep them from fading. Both are useful, and they can run on the same day.

Should math warm-ups be graded?

No. Warm-ups work best when students feel free to guess, estimate and share wrong answers. Use them to listen, not to score. If you want a record, jot down the names of students who seemed stuck.

What are good math warm ups for kids who struggle?

Pick routines with more than one way in, like estimating, true or false, or which is closer. Let students answer on whiteboards so nobody has to speak first, give think time before anyone shares, and ask for strategies, not just answers.
