Math Exit Tickets: How to Write, Sort and Use Them

Math exit tickets are two or three quick questions students answer at the end of a lesson, so you know before tomorrow who understood and who didn't. The trick is writing questions that separate "can follow the steps" from "really gets it," then sorting the tickets into three piles that become tomorrow's groups. This guide covers how to write one, how to sort a class set in a few minutes, and ready-to-use examples for 4th grade, with notes for other grades.

What math exit tickets are for

An exit ticket answers one question: what should I do tomorrow? Not "what grade does this student get," and not "did they enjoy the lesson."

That purpose shapes everything else:

  • It has to be short, so it fits in the last three minutes.
  • It has to be about today's lesson only, so the results point to a clear next step.
  • It has to sort students, so the questions can't all be the same difficulty.

"Did you understand today? Thumbs up or thumbs down" isn't an exit ticket. A student can feel confident and still get the problem wrong, and a thumbs-up gives you nothing to sort.

How to write a three-question exit ticket

Use the same structure every time:

  1. The core question. One problem at the level you taught. A student who misses this needs reteaching.
  2. The twist. The same idea with the unknown in a new place or a small change in context. Students who get #1 but miss #2 may be following steps without the understanding behind them.
  3. The why. A one-sentence explanation. It's optional for younger students, but it's where you find the kids who are ready for more.

Here's that structure for a fourth-grade lesson on equivalent fractions, using problems from the Grade 4 Equivalent fractions pages:

  • Core: 5/6 = ___/12 (answer: 10)
  • Twist: 2/3 = 8/___ (answer: 12; now the missing number is the denominator)
  • Why: "Explain how you know 3/5 and 6/10 are equal."

A student who writes 10 for the first but 9 for the second has probably added instead of multiplied (2 + 6 = 8, so 3 + 6 = 9). That tells you exactly what to reteach: the numerator and denominator are multiplied by the same number, here 4.

Keep the answer key beside you when you sort, so you're checking tickets rather than re-solving every problem.

These use real problems from Grade 4 skills. Copy one set onto a half sheet or an index card.

Interpreting remainders

  • Core: "47 cookies are packed 6 to a box. How many full boxes?" (7)
  • Twist: "50 students are going on a trip. Each van holds 4. How many vans are needed?" (13)
  • Why: "Both problems have a remainder. Why is one answer rounded down and the other rounded up?"

47 ÷ 6 = 7 R5, and the 5 leftover cookies don't fill a box, so the answer is 7. 50 ÷ 4 = 12 R2, but the last 2 students still need a ride, so the answer is 13. A student who writes "12 R2" for the second one can divide but hasn't yet connected the remainder to the situation.

The three levels of this skill show how the question can be pitched. The Support page sticks to one situation, students and vans (26 students in vans that hold 4 need 7 vans). On Level and Challenge mix vans, boxes of cookies and leftover pencils, so students have to decide what the remainder means every time.

Multi-digit multiplication

  • Core: 265 × 7 (1855)
  • Twist: 45 × 78 (3510)
  • Why: "Is 3510 a reasonable answer for 45 × 78? How can you tell without multiplying again?"

A strong explanation uses an estimate: 45 × 80 = 3600, which is close to 3510. The twist moves from a one-digit to a two-digit multiplier, which is where place-value slips in the second partial product tend to appear.

Division with remainders

  • Core: 681 ÷ 7 (97 R2)
  • Twist: "Check your answer by multiplying. What should 97 × 7 + 2 equal?" (681)
  • Why: "Can the remainder when you divide by 7 ever be 7 or more? Explain."

The third question catches students who stop dividing too soon. If a remainder is 7 or bigger, another group of 7 still fits.

How to sort exit tickets in a few minutes

Don't mark every answer. Sort into three piles.

Look at the core question first; that alone sorts most of the class. Read explanations only on tickets where the first two answers are right. Write the three groups on a sticky note and tomorrow's plan is done. If most of the class lands in "not yet," the whole class needs the lesson again, not just a small group.

Adapting exit tickets for other grades

Grades 1–2: One question, small numbers, very little writing. A true-or-false card like "7 + 6 = 8 + 5. True or false?" takes seconds (true; both sides make 13). Students can also whisper their answer to you as they line up.

Grade 3: Keep the twist. After a multiplication and division lesson, "___ ÷ 6 = 9" (54) makes a good second question because it runs a known fact backward.

Grade 5: Ask "why" more often. After a lesson on order of operations, give "4 × (2 + 8) - 8" (32) and ask what the answer would be without the parentheses. (4 × 2 + 8 - 8 = 8, which shows exactly what the parentheses change.)

Mistakes that make exit tickets less useful

  • Too many questions. Five problems take too long to sort and turn the ticket into a quiz.
  • One difficulty level. If every question is the same kind, everyone lands in the same pile and the ticket can't tell you who needs what.
  • Collecting and never using them. A ticket that doesn't change tomorrow's lesson is just another worksheet. Sort them the same day.
  • Grading them. Students need to feel safe showing what they can't do yet.
  • Ignoring the wrong answers. The most common wrong answer on a ticket is a ready-made problem for class discussion. Our guide to error analysis in math shows how to turn it into a short routine.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a math exit ticket have?

Two or three. One question checks the core skill, a second checks the same idea in a slightly different form, and an optional third asks students to explain. More than that turns the ticket into a quiz and takes too long to sort.

Should exit tickets be graded?

Usually not. An exit ticket is a snapshot of learning in progress, taken right after new teaching. Use it to plan the next lesson and form groups. Grading it can make students nervous about showing what they can't do yet.

What do I do with exit tickets after class?

Sort them into three piles: not yet, got it, and ready for more. That takes a few minutes for a whole class. The piles become tomorrow's groups: reteach the first, practice with the second, and extend the third.

Do exit tickets work in lower grades?

Yes, with a simpler format. First and second graders can answer one problem, circle true or false, or tell you their answer as they line up. Keep the question short and the numbers small so the ticket shows understanding rather than writing speed.
