How to Teach Place Value, Grades 1-5

Knowing how to teach place value comes down to one idea your child has to see with their own hands: ten ones can become one ten. Start with real objects bundled into tens, connect the bundles to the digits in a written number, and keep asking, "What is this digit worth?" Then stretch that same idea to hundreds, to expanded form, and finally to the rule that each place is worth ten times the place to its right. The steps below work for a first grader meeting tens for the first time and for an older child who never quite got it.

Why place value is harder than it looks

To an adult, 43 is obviously 4 tens and 3 ones. To a young child, it's a 4 and a 3 sitting next to each other. The big idea is that a ten is one thing (one bundle) and ten things (ten sticks) at the same time. Until that clicks, children treat each digit as its own small number, and the confusion shows up later in regrouping, rounding and long division.

So the goal isn't memorizing "tens place, ones place." It's seeing the bundles inside a number.

How to teach place value in five steps

These steps build on each other. Spend as long as your child needs on each one; the first two usually take the longest.

Step 1: Bundle real objects

Give your child a pile of 34 craft sticks and ask them to count. Then show a faster way: wrap bundles of ten with rubber bands. Count the bundles (10, 20, 30), then the loose ones (31, 32, 33, 34). Repeat with several numbers before writing anything down.

Step 2: Name the tens and ones

Connect the bundles to words: "3 tens and 4 ones." You build a number and your child names it; then your child builds a number you name. Switch roles often.

Step 3: Show the number three ways

Put three versions side by side: the bundles, the numeral 34, and 30 + 4. Ask, "Where is the 30 in 34?" Most children point at the 3. Help them say, "The 3 means 30."

Step 4: Give zero its own lesson

Build 60 with six bundles and no loose sticks, and ask what goes in the ones place. Later, 207 means 2 hundreds, 0 tens and 7 ones. Zero is a placeholder that says "none of these," and it trips up more children than any other digit.

Step 5: Trade ten for one

Unbundle a ten into ten ones, then bundle ten ones back into a ten. This trading is exactly what regrouping in addition and subtraction does on paper, so time spent here pays off for years. How to teach place value for grade 1

The first grade standard (1.NBT.B.2) is two-digit numbers as tens and ones. Stay with objects until your child can build any number up to 99 without counting every single stick.

When you move to paper, choose place value worksheets for grade 1 that do three things: include numbers with zero ones, cover the whole range to 99, and sometimes run the question backwards. The Tens and ones pack in our Math Practice Library does this across its three levels:

  • Support keeps numbers small: "28 = ___ tens and ___ ones" (2 tens, 8 ones). The strategy tip on the page reads, "The first digit tells the tens, the last tells the ones."

  • Challenge reverses the question: "4 tens and 7 ones =" (47).

That reversed question is a quick check. A child who can split 47 into tens and ones but can't build it from "4 tens and 7 ones" is copying digits off the page rather than thinking in tens. Go back to the sticks for a day. More first grade skills are on the 1st grade math worksheets page.

Grade 2: hundreds and expanded form

In second grade the same idea stretches to three digits (2.NBT.A.1 and 2.NBT.A.3). Add a new bundle: ten tens make a hundred. Ten bundles of ten sticks wrapped together, or a flat from a base-ten set, makes that visible.

Good place value worksheets for grade 2 ask children to move between forms. On the Expanded form pages:

  • Support: "Write 378 in expanded form." (300 + 70 + 8). Numbers like 408 (400 + 8) test the zero.
  • On Level mixes in number words: "Write 616 in words." (six hundred sixteen)
  • Challenge goes backwards: "600 + 80 + 5 =" (685)

The Hundreds, tens and ones pack adds a question many children find surprisingly hard: "How many tens make 600?" The answer is 60, not 6. At Challenge it becomes "How many complete groups of ten are in 533?" (53). A child who answers 3 is reading the tens digit instead of counting all the tens. Build 533 with 5 hundreds, 3 tens and 3 ones, then unbundle each hundred into 10 tens. Fifty tens from the hundreds plus the 3 tens already there makes 53 tens. Grades 3 to 5: the ten-times rule

By fourth grade, place value becomes a relationship (4.NBT.A.1): a digit is worth ten times what it would be worth in the place to its right. A place value chart drawn on paper, with a digit written on a sticky note, makes this concrete. Put the 7 in the tens column, then slide it one place left: 70 becomes 700.

  • Support: "The 7 in 700 is ___ times the value of the 7 in 70." (10)
  • On Level: "In 707, the 7 on the left is ___ times the value of the 7 on the right." (100, because the digits are two places apart)
  • Challenge: "In 5005, the 5 on the left is ___ times the value of the 5 on the right." (1000)

Teach your child to count the jumps between the two digits. One jump is 10 times, two jumps is 100 times, three jumps is 1000 times. In fifth grade the same rule runs the other direction into decimals, where each place to the right is worth one tenth as much.

A ten-minute daily routine

Place value grows with short, frequent practice more than long sessions.

  1. Two minutes: build it. You say a number; your child builds it or draws quick sticks and dots.
  2. Three minutes: say it three ways. Numeral, words, expanded form.
  3. Four minutes: a short page. A handful of problems at the right level, checked right away with the answer key.
  4. One minute: one thinking question. "How many tens are in 360?" (36)

Frequently asked questions

At what age should kids learn place value?

Most children meet tens and ones in first grade, around age 6 or 7, and hundreds in second grade. Place value keeps growing through fifth grade, when it extends to decimals. Follow your child's readiness more than their age.

What materials do I need to teach place value?

Anything you can bundle in tens works: craft sticks with rubber bands, straws, or dried beans in small cups. Base-ten blocks are handy for hundreds but not required. A place value chart drawn on paper covers the rest.

Why does my child say the 4 in 43 is worth 4?

They're reading the digit rather than its value, which is a normal stage. Ask '4 what?' and have them show 4 bundles of ten. Asking that question across many numbers builds the habit of thinking in tens.

What comes after place value?

Adding and subtracting with regrouping, which is trading tens for ones on paper. Comparing numbers, rounding and multiplying by 10 also depend on place value, so keep reviewing it as you move on.
