Equivalent Fractions for Kids: How to Explain It at Home

Equivalent fractions are different names for the same amount. One half, two fourths and four eighths all cover exactly the same part of a whole; the whole has simply been cut into more equal pieces. To make one, multiply the top and bottom numbers by the same number: 1/2 = 2/4 because both numbers were multiplied by 2.

That is the grown-up answer. When you are explaining equivalent fractions for kids at the kitchen table, it lands much better with a strip of paper in their hands. This guide walks through that activity, the reason the rule works, the mix-ups to expect, and what practice looks like in grades 3 and 4.

Equivalent fractions for kids: the one-sentence version

Try this sentence: "It's the same amount, cut into more pieces."

Picture a pizza cut into 2 slices, and you eat 1. Now picture the same pizza cut into 4 slices, and you eat 2. You ate the same amount of pizza either way. So 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent.

Everything else about equivalent fractions grows out of that sentence. When your child gets stuck later, come back to it.

The paper strip activity (10 minutes, no printer)

You need two strips of paper the same length (cut a sheet the long way), a pencil and a crayon.

  1. Halves. Fold the first strip in half. Unfold it, color one part and write 1/2 on it.
  2. Fourths. Refold it, then fold in half again. Unfold. There are now 4 equal parts, and the colored part covers 2 of them. Write 2/4 under 1/2.
  3. Eighths. Fold it back up and fold in half one more time. Unfold: 8 parts, 4 colored. Write 4/8.
  4. Ask the big question. "Did the colored part get bigger or smaller?" It didn't. Only the number of pieces changed.
  5. Thirds and sixths. Fold the second strip into thirds, like a letter going into an envelope. Color one third. Fold the whole thing in half and unfold: 6 parts, 2 colored. So 1/3 = 2/6.

Lay the strips side by side and read the chains out loud: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8, and 1/3 = 2/6. Fraction strips like these are a common third-grade classroom model, and a homemade set works just as well as a printed one.

Why "multiply the top and bottom by the same number" works

Look at step 2 again. When you folded the strip in half, every piece became 2 pieces. So the total number of pieces doubled (2 became 4), and the number of colored pieces doubled too (1 became 2). That is why the rule multiplies both numbers by the same thing.

In kid words: "If you cut every piece into 2, you get twice as many pieces and twice as many colored pieces."

This also explains the most common wrong rule. Children often try adding the same number to the top and bottom, so 1/2 becomes 2/3. Adding doesn't match anything you can do with the paper. Draw 2/3 and it is clearly more than half the strip, so it isn't equivalent.

The rule works backward, too. You can take 4/8 back to 1/2 by dividing both numbers by 4, which is like unfolding. Teachers call that simplifying.

When kids learn equivalent fractions

In Common Core, equivalent fractions arrive in two stages, and then become a tool.

Grade 3 (3.NF.A.3). Children recognize simple equivalent fractions using pictures and number lines, such as 1/2 = 2/4, and explain why they are equal. They also learn that some fractions equal whole numbers, like 4/4 = 1 and 6/3 = 2. On a number line, 1/2 and 2/4 land on exactly the same point, which is a lovely way to see equivalence. In third-grade comparison practice, the Challenge items slip in pairs like 1/2 and 3/6, or 2/3 and 4/6, where the right answer is the equal sign.

Grade 4 (4.NF.A.1). Children use multiplication to make equivalent fractions and explain why it works, with denominators such as 5, 10 and 12. They then use equivalent fractions to compare pairs like 3/4 and 5/6.

A good equivalent fractions worksheet for grade 4 does more than repeat 1/2 = __/4 over and over. It moves the blank around, so children have to think about what was multiplied instead of copying a pattern.

When your child is stuck on something like 2/3 = 8/__, ask one question: "What did the 2 get multiplied by to make 8?" It was multiplied by 4, so the 3 gets multiplied by 4 too, and the answer is 12. If they aren't convinced, have them check with a drawing.

Common mix-ups and what to say

  • "4/8 is bigger than 1/2 because the numbers are bigger." Put the strips side by side. Bigger numbers can mean smaller pieces.
  • Multiplying only the top. If your child writes 1/2 = 2/2, ask what 2/2 means. It's the whole strip, so the bottom has to change too.
  • Adding instead of multiplying. If your child writes 2/3 = 3/4, draw both. 3/4 is a little more.
  • Drawing unequal pieces. If the parts in a drawing aren't equal, the fractions won't match. Folding paper helps because folds keep the pieces equal.
  • Stopping at "they look the same." That's a great start. Follow up with "What number did you multiply by?"

  • Stacked number lines. Draw three lines of the same length, one under the other, each from 0 to 1. Split the first into halves, the second into fourths and the third into eighths. Draw a straight line down from 1/2. It passes through 2/4 and 4/8.
  • Measuring cups. Fill the 1/2 cup using the 1/4 cup. It takes two scoops, so 2/4 = 1/2. Then count how many 1/4 cups fill a whole cup: 4/4 = 1.
  • Your paper strips. Keep them in an envelope and pull them out for every fraction homework page this year.
  • A find-the-fake game. Write four fraction pairs, three equivalent and one not, like 1/2 and 2/4, 1/3 and 2/6, 2/4 and 4/8, 1/2 and 2/3. Your child finds the fake and proves it with a drawing.
