Rounding Worksheets for 3rd Grade: Help Your Child at Home

The best rounding worksheets for 3rd grade start with a number line and only later ask your child to round from the digits alone. Third graders round whole numbers to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred (standard 3.NBT.A.1), and every problem asks the same question underneath: which ten, or which hundred, is this number closer to?

If your child has memorized "5 or more, round up" and still gets answers wrong, the rule usually isn't the problem. The picture behind it is missing. This guide shows how to build that picture at home, the numbers that catch kids out, and a short two-week plan you can do in ten minutes a day.

Why rounding trips kids up

Rounding asks your child to hold three things at once: the number, the two friendly numbers on either side of it, and which of those is closer. A digit rule can skip all three. That's how a child can round 74 to 70 correctly, then be asked to round 686 to the nearest ten and write 700, because they rounded to the hundred instead.

A number line fixes this, because on a line "closer" is something you can see.

Teach it in three steps, and say the steps out loud together for the first dozen problems.

  1. Find the two neighbors. For 24, the tens on either side are 20 and 30.
  2. Mark the halfway point. Halfway between 20 and 30 is 25.
  3. Decide which side the number is on. 24 is below 25, so it's closer to 20. 24 rounds to 20.

The same steps work for hundreds. For 253, the neighbors are 200 and 300, halfway is 250, and 253 is just past it, so it rounds to 300. For 649, the neighbors are 600 and 700, halfway is 650, and 649 falls one short, so it rounds to 600.

The Support page shown above gives each problem its own number line running from one ten to the next. For "Mark 24 on the line, then round it to the nearest ten," the line runs from 20 to 30. Your child places the number, sees which end it's nearer, and writes the answer: 20. Other problems include 85, which sits exactly halfway between 80 and 90 and rounds up to 90.

You don't need printed lines at home. Draw one on scrap paper, or pull out a tape measure: find 24 inches and ask whether it's closer to 20 or to 30.

Numbers that catch kids

Once the number line makes sense, practice these cases on purpose. They're where children tend to slip.

The chain-rounding trap

Say your child is asked to round 445 to the nearest hundred. They round the ones first, so 445 becomes 450, and then round 450 up to 500. It feels logical, but it's wrong. On a number line, 445 sits between 400 and 500 and hasn't reached the halfway point of 450, so it rounds to 400. Rounding always happens in one step, from the original number.

Compare it with 455 in the table. That one really is past 450, so 500 is correct. Putting 445 and 455 side by side on the same line is one of the most useful five minutes you can spend on rounding.

Choosing rounding worksheets for 3rd grade

Look for pages that:

  • Start with a number line, then move to rounding without one.
  • Mix tens and hundreds on the same page, so your child has to read each question carefully. "Round 686 to the nearest ten" next to "Round 494 to the nearest hundred" is a good test.
  • Include the tricky cases from the table above, not only friendly numbers.
  • Come with an answer key, so checking takes seconds instead of a calculator session.

The image above shows the same skill at three levels. Support uses smaller numbers, with problems like rounding 53 to the nearest ten (50) and 88 to the nearest ten (90). On Level mixes tens and hundreds with three-digit numbers, including a halfway case: 550 rounds to 600. Challenge is full of numbers that need a second look, such as 850 to the nearest ten (850) and 498 to the nearest ten (500).

Where rounding shows up next

Rounding isn't a unit to finish and forget. It's the tool your child will use for years to check whether an answer makes sense.

In third grade, it's how children estimate sums. For 571 + 164, round each number to the nearest hundred: 600 + 200 = 800. The exact answer, 735, is close to that, so it makes sense. In fourth grade, rounding stretches to bigger numbers and any place value, and it becomes the quick check for multi-digit multiplication.

Everyday moments count as practice too. "The groceries came to $38. About how much is that, to the nearest ten dollars?" (About $40.) "We have 162 miles to go. Is that closer to 100 or 200?" (Closer to 200.)

Answers for the trickier days: Day 1 rounds to 20, 30 and 30. Day 4 gives 20, 80 and 850. Day 7 gives 200, 600 and 700. Day 8 gives 500 and 700. Day 9 gives 400 and 500. Day 10 estimates 800.

Frequently asked questions

What rounding does 3rd grade cover?

Third graders round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 (Common Core standard 3.NBT.A.1), usually with numbers up to 1,000. Rounding larger numbers to any place comes in 4th grade, and rounding decimals comes in 5th grade.

Does a 5 round up or down?

Up. A number exactly halfway, like 15 or 550, is the same distance from both neighbors, so everyone agrees to round it up. That makes 15 round to 20 and 550 round to 600 when rounding to the nearest hundred.

Why does 850 rounded to the nearest ten stay 850?

Because 850 is already a multiple of ten. There is nothing between it and itself, so it is its own nearest ten. Rounding 850 to the nearest hundred is a different question, and that answer is 900.

Should my child learn a rounding rhyme?

A rhyme can help a child remember which way to go, but it works best after they understand the number line picture. If your child uses a rule, ask them now and then to show the number on a line and prove which neighbor is closer.
