2nd Grade Math With Regrouping: A Parent's Guide
2nd grade math with regrouping means trading when a column can't work on its own. In addition, ten ones become one ten (the little 1 you carry). In subtraction, one ten becomes ten ones so there are enough to take away. Children start with two-digit numbers, move to three-digit numbers later in second grade, and are expected to add and subtract within 1,000 fluently by the end of third grade.
If the homework looks different from the way you learned it, that's normal. The steps below work alongside any method your child's teacher uses, because they focus on the idea underneath it all: ten of one place makes one of the next.
What regrouping really means
Grab a handful of dimes and pennies. They make the idea something your child can hold.
Take 45 + 19. Put out 4 dimes and 5 pennies, then 1 dime and 9 pennies.
- Pennies first: 5 + 9 = 14 pennies. That's too many for the ones place, so trade 10 pennies for 1 dime. You're left with 4 pennies and one extra dime.
- Dimes next: 4 + 1, plus the traded dime, makes 6 dimes.
- Total: 6 dimes and 4 pennies, or 64.
That trade is regrouping. The little 1 written above the tens column is the traded dime. When your child can tell you "14 ones is 1 ten and 4 ones," they understand what they're writing, not just copying a step.
How to teach 2nd grade math with regrouping at home
Work through these four stages in order. Move on when your child can do the current stage comfortably without your help.
1. Build it
Use coins, or bundles of 10 straws held with rubber bands. Try 28 + 26. Count the loose ones: 8 + 6 = 14. Make a bundle of 10 and move it over to the tens. Now there are 2 + 2 + 1 = 5 tens and 4 loose ones: 54.
2. Draw it
Swap the objects for a quick sketch, with a line for each ten and a dot for each one. For 53 + 29, draw 5 lines and 3 dots, then 2 lines and 9 dots. Circle ten dots and turn them into one line. Count: 8 lines and 2 dots, or 82.
3. Write it in columns
Line the numbers up, ones under ones. Say each step out loud while your child writes: "3 plus 9 is 12. That's 1 ten and 2 ones. Write the 2 and carry the ten. 5 plus 2 plus the carried 1 is 8."
4. Decide first
The real skill is knowing when to regroup. Mix problems so your child has to look before starting: 23 + 24 needs no trade, but 55 + 7 does. Before any pencil moves, ask, "Will the ones make ten or more?"
Regrouping in subtraction
Subtraction runs the other way. In 71 − 36, you can't take 6 ones from 1 one, so open up a ten. 7 tens and 1 one become 6 tens and 11 ones. Now 11 − 6 = 5 and 6 − 3 = 3, so the answer is 35. With coins, it's trading one dime for 10 pennies.
The mistake to watch for is flipping the digits. Say your child solves 51 − 22, sees "1 − 2," decides that can't be done, and does 2 − 1 instead. That gives 31, but the right answer is 29. A fast check is to add the answer back: 31 + 22 = 53, not 51, so something went wrong. 29 + 22 = 51.
Zeros deserve their own practice. In 400 − 240 there are no tens or ones to trade from, so the trade has to start in the hundreds. A mental shortcut helps: 400 is 40 tens and 240 is 24 tens, so the answer is 16 tens, or 160.

Error-analysis pages turn this into a game. Instead of solving, your child judges someone else's work.

The On Level page shown above describes a worked mistake and asks for the reason: "Rosa worked out 45 + 19 like this: ones: 5 + 9 = 14, wrote 4; tens: 4 + 1 = 5. The answer should be 64. What mistake did Rosa make?" (She didn't carry the 1 ten from the 14.) A child who groans at another page of sums will often happily hunt for someone else's error.

- A mix of regrouping and no regrouping on the same page, so your child practices deciding.
- Column layout with room to write the traded digit.
- Missing-number problems, like 32 + ___ = 100 (the answer is 68), which show whether your child sees how adding and subtracting connect.
- An answer key, so you can check work in seconds.
- An easier and a harder version of the same skill, so you can adjust without switching topics.

The On Level page mixes in regrouping, such as 69 + 22 = 91 and 55 + 7 = 62. The Challenge page adds missing numbers, like 44 + ___ = 80 (36).
3rd grade math worksheets for addition and subtraction use the same ideas with three-digit numbers, and some problems need two trades. In 397 + 465, the ones make 12 (carry a ten), the tens make 9 + 6 + 1 = 16 (carry a hundred), and the hundreds make 3 + 4 + 1 = 8, for 862. On the subtraction side, 802 − 516 = 286 needs a trade across the zero in the tens place.

Keep it short and stop while it's still going well. Ten focused minutes do more than forty frustrated ones.
When to slow down
If your child can follow the column steps but can't explain why the 1 moves, spend more time building and drawing. Steps without the idea underneath tend to fall apart when three-digit numbers arrive.

When do kids learn regrouping in school?
Under the Common Core standards, second graders add and subtract within 100 with regrouping, then within 1,000. By the end of third grade, children are expected to add and subtract within 1,000 fluently. Your child's teacher can tell you where the class is right now.
Is regrouping the same as carrying and borrowing?
Yes. It is the same process with a newer name. Teachers say regrouping or trading because it reminds children what is really happening: ten ones become one ten, or one ten becomes ten ones.
Should my child use drawings or the standard column method?
Both have a place. Objects and drawings build understanding of why the little 1 moves; columns are faster once that makes sense. Follow the method your child's teacher uses so homework and class match.
Why does my child get some problems right and others wrong on the same page?
Look at which ones are wrong. If every mistake is on a problem that needs regrouping, your child knows the column steps but not when or how to trade. Go back to building those problems with coins before doing more written practice.
