How to Practice Math Facts at Home: Strategies First

The best way to practice math facts at home is a few minutes a day, one small group of facts at a time, starting with a strategy your child understands before you ask for speed. Doubles first, then facts that lean on doubles. Tens first, then facts that lean on ten. Recall grows out of those strategies, and it lasts longer than facts crammed from a stack of random flash cards.

Here is how to set that up for addition and subtraction in grades 1 and 2, multiplication and division in grade 3, and what to do each week.

What fact fluency means (and what it doesn't)

Fact fluency means your child can find a fact accurately, flexibly and without much effort. It does not mean speed at any cost. A child who knows 8 + 5 is 13 because "8 + 2 is 10, and 3 more is 13" is on the way to fluency, even before the answer comes instantly.

Here is what the Common Core standards expect by grade:

Teach facts in strategy groups, not in order

Practicing facts 0 through 10 in order, or all at once, treats them as 100 unrelated things to memorize. Grouping them by strategy turns them into a few ideas.

Addition and subtraction groups

Turn-around facts cut the work nearly in half. If your child knows 9 + 5 = 14, they also know 5 + 9 = 14.

By the time your child reaches the last group, turn-arounds mean only three new facts are left: 7 × 7, 7 × 8 and 8 × 8.

Math fact fluency for 2nd grade

Second grade is the year addition and subtraction facts within 20 move from "I can figure it out" to "I just know it." Make-a-ten is the strategy that carries the most weight. A first grade page on properties of addition sets it up with problems like "9 + 5 + 1: 9 + 1 makes 10. Add that first. Total?" (15). By second grade, your child uses the same idea inside a single fact: 9 + 5 is 9 + 1 + 4, which is 10 + 4.

On the second grade fact fluency pages, Support includes friendly facts like 6 + 4 and 15 − 10 alongside a few harder ones like 15 − 8. On Level adds problems like 20 − 8 and 19 − 7. Challenge asks for missing addends, like 8 + ___ = 16 and 12 + ___ = 18, which is exactly the "think addition" move that makes subtraction easier.

A practical second grade approach: pick one strategy group per week. During make-a-ten week, practice only facts with 8 or 9 in them, using a ten-frame (a 2-by-5 grid) and two colors of counters. Your child fills the frame with 8 of one color, adds 5 of the other, and sees that 2 of them finish the ten and 3 spill over.

Multiplication facts in 3rd grade

Third graders need to see multiplication as equal groups before memorizing products. Once they do, the properties of multiplication become shortcuts: 5 × 9 = 9 × 5, and 6 × 8 can be split into 5 × 8 plus 1 × 8.

The Challenge page mixes regular facts with missing factors, like ___ × 5 = 45, 7 × ___ = 42 and 6 × ___ = 54. Those missing-factor problems are the bridge to division: a child who can solve 7 × ___ = 42 already knows 42 ÷ 7.

Watch for two common mistakes, both featured on the third grade "Who is correct?" page:

  • Adding instead of multiplying. One item shows a student working out 6 × 7 as 6 + 7 = 13. If this happens, go back to drawing 6 groups of 7 dots.
  • Skip-counting one group too many. Another shows 4 × 9 counted as 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, which is ten groups of 4 instead of nine. Have your child raise one finger for each number they say, and stop at 9 fingers.

Five-minute ways to practice math facts at home

Short, frequent practice fits family life better than long sessions. Pick one of these per day:

  • Card flip. Remove the face cards from a deck (ace = 1). Flip two cards and say the sum, or the product for third graders. Keep the cards for facts your child answers quickly.
  • Three-pile sort. Go through flash cards for one strategy group and sort them into "know it fast," "can figure it out" and "not yet." Practice only the middle pile this week.
  • Fact of the day. Stick one fact on the fridge. Ask it at random moments: brushing teeth, in the car, before dessert.
  • Dice rolls. Two regular dice for addition within 12. For multiplication, roll one die and multiply by the week's focus number.
  • Reverse questions. "I'm thinking of two one-digit numbers that multiply to 24." (3 and 8, or 4 and 6.) Questions with more than one answer get children thinking about fact families.
  • Beat your own score. If your child enjoys it, count how many facts they answer correctly in a minute and compare only with their own last try. Skip this entirely if the clock causes tears.

Multiplication fact practice: free options and what to look for

Whatever apps, games or worksheets you choose, look for these features:

  • Facts grouped by strategy, not random facts from 0 to 10.
  • Missing-number forms (7 × ___ = 42), not just 7 × 6 = ___.
  • Old facts mixed in with new ones, so earlier groups stay fresh.
  • An answer key or instant check, so mistakes don't get practiced.
  • Accuracy rewarded before speed, especially for children still building strategies.

A sample week of fact practice

About five to seven minutes a day is enough.

When a group feels easy on Friday, start the next one on Monday. If it doesn't, give it another week. There is no prize for finishing early.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child know math facts by heart?

Under the Common Core standards, children are expected to know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of second grade, and all products of two one-digit numbers by the end of third grade. Children get there at different speeds, so use those as goals, not deadlines.

Are timed math fact tests bad?

Quick recall does matter eventually, because slow facts make bigger problems harder. But timing a child who doesn't yet have a strategy for a fact mostly practices guessing, and some children find the clock stressful. Build strategies first, and if you time anything, have your child compare only with their own earlier results.

Is it okay for my child to count on fingers?

Yes, as a stage. Fingers are a sensible tool while a child is learning what addition means. The goal is to move toward strategies like make-a-ten and doubles, so that finger counting gradually becomes unnecessary rather than forbidden.

What order should multiplication facts be learned in?

A common order is 2s, 10s and 5s first, then 9s, 4s, 3s and 6s, each using a fact your child already knows. Because 3 x 8 is the same as 8 x 3, only a few facts remain by the end: 7 x 7, 7 x 8 and 8 x 8.
