How to Help Your Child With Math at Home (Grades 1-5)

The most useful answer to "how to help my child with math at home" is smaller than most parents expect. Practice for 10 to 15 minutes on most days, at a level where your child gets most problems right with some effort, and ask them to explain their thinking out loud instead of showing them your way. You don't need to be a "math person." You need a routine, the right page, and a few good questions.

Find the right level before you practice

The Support page uses smaller numbers, with problems like 24 + 12 and 22 + 13, and includes a worked example and a strategy tip on a shorter page. The On Level page mixes in regrouping, with problems like 55 + 7 and 69 + 22. The Challenge page changes the kind of thinking: 32 + ___ = 100 asks for the missing part, and 53 + 29 regroups with bigger numbers.

Watch where your child slows down, not just the score:

How to practice math at home in 15 minutes

Short and regular beats long and occasional. Here is a routine that fits between dinner and bath:

A few rules keep the routine alive. Same time most days, so it isn't a nightly negotiation. Stop at 15 minutes even if the page isn't finished. End on a problem your child can do.

With more than one child, give each their own level of the same skill. Everyone works on "addition within 100" at the kitchen table, and nobody needs to notice whose page has smaller numbers.

Math homework help for parents: what to say when you don't know the method

Homework is where many parents feel stuck, because the method on the sheet isn't the one they learned. You don't need to know the method to help. You need to ask instead of tell.

Try these questions in order:

  1. "Read me the problem." Plenty of homework mix-ups are really reading mix-ups.
  2. "Show me what your teacher did in class." Let your child be the expert. Look at the example at the top of the sheet or in their notes.
  3. "What do you already know?" For 55 + 7, they might say "55 is 5 away from 60."
  4. "What could you try?" Then let them try, even if it's slow.
  5. "How could you check?" Counting on from 55 is slow but it works: 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62.

What to avoid: taking the pencil, teaching a shortcut the class hasn't learned, or saying "this is easy." If your child is truly stuck after five minutes, have them write a one-line note to the teacher ("I didn't understand how to regroup") and move on. That note tells the teacher something useful. A page you finished for them hides it.

How to help your child get better at math over a school year

One good evening won't change much. A steady rhythm across months will. Two habits matter most.

Keep old skills in use. Skills that aren't practiced get rusty. Once a week, swap the new-skill page for a mixed review page that pulls problems from skills your child has already learned. A third grader might see 40 ÷ 5, then "Round 45 to the nearest ten," then 3 × ___ = 24 on the same page.

Move up on evidence, not on the calendar. When your child gets a level mostly right two sessions in a row and can explain one problem to you, move up. If the new level goes badly, drop back for a week. That isn't failure; it's exactly what the levels are for.

Everyday math that counts as practice

Some of the best ways to help your child in math don't involve paper. The trick is to ask a question and wait for the answer instead of giving it.

  • Grade 1: "We need 8 plates and I've put out 5. How many more?" (3.) Count the steps to the car, then count back down.
  • Grade 2: Hand over coins at the store. "You have 3 quarters. Is that enough for a 60-cent pencil? How much change?" (75 cents, so yes, with 15 cents back.)
  • Grade 3: "The movie starts at 4:15 and lasts 50 minutes. When does it end?" (5:05.) Share 12 crackers among 4 people and say the division: 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
  • Grade 4: Double a recipe that uses 3/4 cup of milk. (6/4 cups, which is 1 2/4 or 1 1/2 cups.)
  • Grade 5: "Is $2.49 plus $3.75 more than $6?" ($6.24, so yes.)

Keep these light. One question on a car ride is plenty.

Use the answer key to teach, not just to grade

When you check a page together, don't only mark the wrong answers. Pick one miss and ask your child to find the mistake themselves. A child who writes 81 for 69 + 22 has usually added 9 + 2 = 11, written the 1, and forgotten the ten. Spotting that on their own is practice in checking work, which is a habit worth building early.

Mark the right answers too. A page with six checkmarks and one circle feels very different from a page with a single red X.

When home practice isn't enough

If your child has worked steadily at a Support level for several weeks and it still isn't clicking, or math time is causing real distress, talk to their teacher first. Teachers see your child alongside the whole class and can tell you what they notice.
