How to Help a Child Struggling With Math: Find the Gap

Here is how to help a child struggling with math: find the exact skill where the trouble starts, go back to the last step your child can do confidently, and rebuild from there with objects, then pictures, then numbers. Keep sessions short, let the mistakes tell you what to teach, and bring the teacher in early.

A child who is struggling with math is rarely "bad at math." More often, one or two building blocks are missing, and later skills are wobbling on top of them. Missing blocks can be found, and they can be taught.

Signs of struggle and what they can point to

Struggle can look like tears, avoidance, slow work or careless-looking errors. The sign matters less than what's behind it. Here are common patterns in grades 1 to 5 and where to look first.

Read the mistakes, not the score

A score of 6 out of 10 tells you very little. The four wrong answers tell you a lot, especially when they are wrong in the same way.

Error-analysis pages are a gentle way to look at mistakes, because the mistake belongs to someone else. On the grade 2 "Who is correct?" page, your child reads how a pretend classmate solved a problem and has to find what went wrong:

One item says Rosa worked out 45 + 19 like this: ones, 5 + 9 = 14, wrote 4; tens, 4 + 1 = 5. The answer should be 64. What mistake did she make? (She didn't carry the ten from 14.) Another shows Priya adding 31 + 39 column by column and writing 610: tens 3 + 3 = 6, ones 1 + 9 = 10, jammed side by side.

If your child makes Rosa's mistake in their own work and can't spot it in hers, you have found the gap. It isn't "addition." It is "what happens when the ones add up to more than 9."

After any practice page, try sorting the wrong answers into three piles:

  1. Fact slips, like 7 + 8 = 16 inside an otherwise correct problem.
  2. The same procedure error, repeated, like forgetting to regroup every time.
  3. Didn't understand the question, like adding when the problem asked how many more.

Often one pile is much bigger than the others, and that tells you what to practice next.

Work backward to find where the gap starts

Math skills stack. Regrouping in grade 2 rests on tens and ones from grade 1. Multi-digit multiplication in grade 4 rests on multiplication facts from grade 3. When a child is stuck on grade-level work, the real gap is often a year or so back.

Say your third grader misses "Round 64 to the nearest ten" and "21 ÷ 3 = ? Think: 3 × ___ = 21" but gets the rest. Now you have two specific skills to work on, not a vague plan to do "more third-grade math."

You can do a rough version by hand. If your child can't do 45 + 19, step back one skill and ask, "How many tens and ones are in 28?" If the answer comes quickly (2 tens and 8 ones), the trouble is regrouping. If it doesn't, start with place value, then return to addition.

Strategies for students struggling with math

Once you know the gap, these strategies work across grades. None of them are tricks; they are ordinary classroom approaches you can use at the kitchen table.

Go from objects to pictures to numbers

This is often called concrete-representational-abstract. For 45 + 19:

  1. Objects: make 45 with 4 bundles of ten straws and 5 loose straws, and 19 with 1 bundle and 9 loose. Push the loose straws together: 14. Rubber-band ten of them into a new bundle. Now there are 6 bundles and 4 loose straws: 64.
  2. Pictures: draw the same thing with sticks for tens and dots for ones, and circle ten dots.
  3. Numbers: write it in columns, and point out that the small 1 you carry is the bundle you made.

Don't rush to step 3. A child who can tell you what the carried 1 means has learned regrouping, not just a pencil move.

Shrink the numbers, keep the idea

If 43 − 36 is too much, the same idea lives in 13 − 6. Solve the small version first, then the big one right after, and ask what was the same. (Both answers are 7, which makes a nice surprise.)

Fewer problems, more talking

Five problems with explanations are worth more than twenty done in silence. Ask "How did you get that?" on right answers too, so the question doesn't become a signal that something is wrong.

Start and end with a win

Open and close each session with a problem your child can do. Confidence is part of the work, not a reward for finishing it.

The Support version of each skill uses smaller numbers, a worked example and a strategy tip, on a shorter page. On the grade 2 subtraction pages above, Support has problems like 38 − 17 and 29 − 18. On Level mixes in regrouping, with problems like 43 − 36. Challenge moves the unknown around: ___ − 39 = 53.

A two-week bridge for a child struggling with two-digit subtraction might look like this:

Protect your child's confidence

How a child feels about math shapes whether they keep trying. A few habits help:

  • Watch your words. "I was never good at math either" can sound like permission to give up. Try "This is tricky, and you can learn it."
  • Praise the process. "You checked that one twice" is more useful than "You're so smart."
  • Keep it short. Ten calm minutes beat forty tense ones.
  • Keep math separate from consequences. Extra worksheets shouldn't be a punishment for something else.

When to ask for more help

Talk to your child's teacher early, not after months of quiet worry. Bring specifics: "She adds 45 + 19 and gets 54, and she can't tell me what the 4 in 45 means." Ask what they see in class and whether the school offers extra support.

If your child keeps struggling even with steady, well-matched practice, or has lasting trouble with things like recognizing small quantities, remembering number order, or telling which of two numbers is bigger, ask the school about an evaluation. Some children have a learning difference such as dyscalculia, and only a qualified professional can identify it.
