How to Help Your Child With Math Word Problems

If "how to help my child with math word problems" is the question on your mind, start here: the trouble is often the story, not the arithmetic. Before any numbers get added or multiplied, your child needs to picture what is happening. The simplest way to build that is a four-step routine (tell it, draw it, write it, check it) plus a little familiarity with the handful of story types that show up again and again in grades 1 to 5.

Why "key words" backfire

Many children learn that "more" means add and "left" means subtract. That works until it doesn't. Here is a first grade problem:

Theo was given 6 more pencils and now has 8. How many pencils were there to start?

The word "more" is right there, but the answer comes from 8 − 6 = 2. A child hunting for key words adds 6 + 8 and writes 14.

Third grade has the same trap in a different form:

Priya puts 54 marbles into bags with 9 in each one. How many bags are needed?

No "divide," no "share," no "each" in the question sentence. A key-word hunter might add 54 + 9 = 63, which means 63 bags for 54 marbles.

Instead of looking for words, ask what is happening. Is something being joined, taken away, compared, shared out, or grouped?

A four-step routine: tell it, draw it, write it, check it

Take this first grade problem: Felix had 3 shells and was given some more. Now there are 16. How many were given?

  1. Tell it. Cover the numbers with your finger and ask your child to retell the story. "Felix had some shells. Someone gave him more. Now he has a bunch. We need to know how many he got." If they can't retell it, they can't solve it yet, so read it again together.
  2. Draw it. Nothing fancy. A long bar labeled 16, split into a part labeled 3 and a part with a question mark. Or 3 dots, a gap, and "16 total."
  3. Write it. The drawing turns into a number sentence: 3 + ___ = 16. Your child might count on from 3 to 16, or notice that 16 − 3 gives the same answer. Either way: 13.
  4. Check it. "Does 13 make sense? 3 + 13 = 16. Yes." Then say the answer as a sentence with a unit: "Felix was given 13 shells."

The routine feels slow at first. That's the point. Once it becomes habit, children start doing the first two steps in their heads.

The story types behind most elementary word problems

Almost every word problem in grades 1 to 3 is one of these situations. Every example below comes from a real practice page.

Start-unknown and compare problems trip up many children because the action in the story ("was given," "more") doesn't match the operation that solves it. If your child handles add-to and take-from easily, spend your practice time on those two.

1st grade word problems: act it out first

First graders solve add-to, take-from and put-together problems within 20. At this age, acting out beats writing. Grab cereal pieces, toy cars or coins, and let your child move the objects while you read the story.

On the On Level page, straightforward stories like "Caleb had 10 cookies and was given 4 more" (14) sit next to trickier ones like Theo's start-unknown pencil problem above. When you choose 1st grade math worksheets for word problems, look for pages with space to draw under each story, and read the problems aloud if reading is still new. You are practicing math, not decoding.

The three levels of this skill show how the same idea grows. Support uses smaller facts: "Nadia has 3 baskets with 6 apples in each one" (18) and "Nadia shares 30 marbles equally between 5 bags" (6). On Level uses harder facts, like "Jonah has 8 trays with 9 cookies on each one" (72) and "Sofia shares 54 shells equally between 6 jars" (9). Challenge leans on the number-of-groups type, like Priya's 54 marbles in bags of 9 (6 bags).

Drawing still helps. For equal groups, draw circles and put the same number of dots in each. For sharing, draw the jars first, then deal dots into them one at a time. If the multiplication and division facts themselves are slow, the story will feel twice as hard, so it's worth reviewing how to practice math facts at home alongside word problems.

Third graders also meet two-step problems written with a letter:

Caleb had 26 marbles, gave away 6, and shared the rest equally into 5 bags. How many in each bag? Let b be the answer.

The key question is "What do I need to find first?" First, how many marbles are left: 26 − 6 = 20. Then share them: 20 ÷ 5 = 4. Written as one equation, b = (26 − 6) ÷ 5, so b = 4.

Two-step and multi-step problems in grades 2, 4 and 5

Grade 2 introduces two steps within 100. Some problems reward a child who stops to think before computing: "Maya started with 57 cards, gave 28 away, then was given 28 more." She gave away and got back the same number, so she still has 57.

Grade 4 mixes operations. "Rosa had 77 cards. 15 cards were lost. The rest were shared equally between 2 packs." First 77 − 15 = 62, then 62 ÷ 2 = 31 cards in each pack. Challenge problems ask your child to work backward: "Sofia had some cookies, was given 152 more, then gave 86 away, and now has 137." Undo the steps in reverse. Add back the 86 she gave away: 137 + 86 = 223. Take away the 152 she was given: 223 − 152 = 71. Check forward: 71 + 152 = 223, and 223 − 86 = 137.

Grade 5 puts fractions into stories: "6 sandwiches are shared equally by 4 people. How much does each get?" Each person gets 6/4, or 1 1/2 sandwiches, which lands between 1 and 2. Drawing six rectangles and splitting them among four people makes that answer visible.

What to say when your child is stuck

Resist the urge to say "just add them." Try one of these instead:

  • "What is this story about?"
  • "What do we know, and what are we trying to find?"
  • "Can you draw what happens?"
  • "Will the answer be bigger or smaller than the number we started with?"
  • "Let's try it with small numbers. If Rosa had 10 cards and lost 2, what would you do?"

That last one is powerful for multi-step problems. Swapping in easy numbers shows the plan without the arithmetic getting in the way, and then the real numbers go back in.

Check that the answer makes sense

The final step is the one children skip most. Build two quick habits:

  1. Answer in a sentence with a unit. "There are 8 baskets," not just "8." This catches answers that answer the wrong question.
  2. Ask whether it's reasonable. If your child says 63 bags for 54 marbles, ask, "Can you fill 63 bags with 54 marbles when each bag needs 9?" Most children laugh and fix it.

Frequently asked questions

Why can my child do the math but not the word problems?

A word problem asks for two jobs: understanding the story and doing the arithmetic. Many children can do 8 - 6 on its own but can't tell that 'was given 6 more and now has 8' calls for it. Practicing the retell and drawing steps usually helps more than extra arithmetic.

Should I read word problems aloud to my child?

For young or still-developing readers, yes, at home. Reading shouldn't block the math practice. Ask the teacher how word problems are handled on class tests so you know when to start having your child read them independently.

What word problems should a 3rd grader be able to solve?

Third graders work on multiplication and division stories within 100, like equal groups, sharing and arrays, with the unknown in any position. They also solve two-step problems using all four operations and write an equation with a letter for the unknown number.

Is it okay to teach key words like 'in all' and 'left'?
