Homeschool math for dyslexia works best when you clear the reading and visual clutter out of the way, so your child can show the math they actually understand: read problems aloud, put fewer problems in view, use objects and number lines, and keep sessions short and predictable. For a child who finds numbers themselves hard, the difficulty often described as dyscalculia, spend more time on number sense and less on speed. Everything below is a practical teaching support. Start with an evaluation, and keep teaching meanwhile
Only a qualified professional can tell you whether your child has dyslexia, dyscalculia, or something else that looks similar at the kitchen table, such as an attention, vision or hearing issue. Good places to start:
- Your pediatrician, who can check vision and hearing and refer you on.
- Your local public school district. Federal special education law requires districts to locate and evaluate children who may need services, and in many states that includes homeschooled children. The rules vary by state, so call and ask how it works where you live.
- An educational psychologist or neuropsychologist for a private evaluation.
You don't need to pause math while you wait. Keep short, specific notes instead. They help an evaluator far more than "math is hard." Here are made-up examples of the kind of note worth writing:

Homeschool math for dyslexia: separate the reading from the math
Many children who find reading hard can reason well about numbers and still get stuck decoding the words around them. So when a word problem goes wrong, first find out whether the reading or the math tripped them up.
Take this item from the Support level of the Grade 2 two-step word problems pack: "Maya had 11 pencils, and was given 4 more, then gave 1 away. How many pencils are left?" The math is 11 + 4 = 15, then 15 − 1 = 14. For a child who reads slowly, the hard part is holding three pieces of information while working through a long sentence.
Try this routine:
- Read it aloud together, or let your child listen once before reading it themselves.
- Show one piece at a time. Cover the problem with an index card and slide it along: "Maya had 11 pencils." Stop and put out 11 counters.
- Act out each step before writing anything.
- Retell it in their own words: "She had some, got more, gave one away."
- Then write the numbers. The strategy tip on the page, "Underline the numbers. Do the first thing, then the second.", gives a routine to repeat every time.

Reading the problem to your child isn't cheating. If the goal of the lesson is adding and subtracting, reading aloud keeps the focus on that goal.
Make pages easier to see and track
A crowded page can be harder than the math on it. A few low-cost changes:
- Fewer problems in view. Fold the page, or cover everything except one row with a blank sheet.
- One digit per square. Graph paper keeps tens in the tens column for addition and subtraction.
- Lined paper turned sideways makes ready-made columns.
- Mark the sign first. A quick highlight on + or − before starting catches "I added instead of subtracted."

Change one thing at a time and keep it for a week, so you can tell what actually helped.
Homeschool math curriculum for dyscalculia: build number sense before speed
When numbers themselves are the hard part, look for these features in any homeschool math curriculum for dyscalculia you're considering, or add them to the one you already use:
- Concrete first, and for as long as needed. Blocks, ten frames, coins and number lines for every new idea.
- Small, repeated steps. The same idea practiced across several days in slightly different ways.
- Models that stay the same. One style of number line and one style of base-ten drawing, used every time, so your child isn't relearning the tool along with the math.
- No timed drills at first. Accuracy and a reliable strategy come before speed.
- Frequent review. Older skills come back often, in small doses.
Number lines show how this works. In the Grade 2 jumps on a number line pack, a Support problem says: "Start at 6. Jump forward 7. Where do you land?" (13), on a line from 0 to 20. An On Level problem says: "Start at 36. Jump forward 14. Where do you land?" (50), on a line from 0 to 50. Memory supports that help, not hinder
Many children who learn differently understand a strategy but can't hold it in mind while also reading, writing and calculating. These supports lower that load:
- A strategy card. Copy the worked example from a Support page onto an index card that stays beside your child.
- A facts chart during multi-step work, when the goal of the lesson is the steps rather than recall.
- Questions that invite talk. "What did you do first?" instead of "Is that right?"
- Short, daily fact practice. Five facts, untimed, with each answer checked right away.
A calm weekly rhythm
Predictable routines lower stress. Here's one way to lay out a week at 15 to 25 minutes a day:

- Fewer errors of one specific type, such as digits in the wrong column.
- Less time before your child starts a problem.
- Your child can tell you what they did and why.
